Massimo D'Alema(Democratic Party of the Left)
Today, while we are in the midst of this catastrophic event, Parliament should refrain from issuing an order for withdrawal. It would be foolish and shameful. The moment for debate will come later. However, it is an opportune moment for course correction by the West with regard to Iraq, which has been a succession of errors, starting with the fact that unilateral warfare has opened up a rift between America and the West itself.
Francesco Rutelli (Olive Tree Coalition)
Today we bow our heads with sadness at the sacrifice of the fallen and their families. While today we offer condolences, tomorrow we will ask for an accounting and a profound change in what Italy is doing in Iraq. Parliament must indicate with moral clarity and with policy formulation what are the legitimate causes for which the Italian people should risk their lives.
Oliviero Diliberto (Communist Party)
The foreign policy of this government consists of fancy dinner parties on the Costa Smerelda, slaps on the back and crooning showtunes with Mariano Apicella...Meanwhile everything is out of control: we are implementing a foreign policy built upon war and the violation of international law.
Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio (Green Party)
We are not saying that the government is responsible for what took place. But we do not want to hear that things continue on as before and therefore we ask for an immediate withdrawal of our troops.
Alessandro Cé (Northern League)
We did not want to debate today--silence is worth a thousand words. I'm sorry to say that certain people are taking advantage of these boys' deaths to score political points.
