(not gonna happen but it makes me proud of the state I once lived in. That some of them didn't even KNOW there was a DOMA reminds me of just how uninformed so many are on gay issues).

(Chapel Hill, North Carolina) Two neighboring communities want the state of North Carolina to repeal its Defense of Marriage Act.
In Chapel Hill, which has one of the highest concentrations of universities and colleges in the US, the motion was proposed by openly gay Councilman Mark Kleinschmidt.
It would be a way for the town to say, "Hell yeah, we're about fairness, we're about equality, we're about treating people fairly," Kleinschmidt said.
"If that means stepping out and making some noise, then give me the noisemaker," he said.
Some members of council did not even know that the law, which prohibits same-sex couples from marrying, existed until Kleinschmidt raised the issue.
During the debate that followed Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy called the state law a "disgrace," and Councilman Bill Strom said that seeking a repeal of the law was a matter of "fairness and justice." Fellow Councilor Ed Harrison said the council should have faith that repeal can pass, even if the odds seem to be against it.
Neighboring Carrboro recently passed a similar motion. Carrboro Mayor Mike Nelson, the first openly gay mayor elected in the state, has been in a relationship with Kleinschmidt for several years.
Both men say the state is losing potentially good employees and some companies won't relocate to North Carolina because of DOMA.
The so-called Defense of Marriage Act was passed in 1996, at the same time a similar law was enacted by Congress. The N.C. law bans same-sex unions and says that same-sex marriages performed outside the state are not valid in North Carolina.
