Or, at least, 51% of them 51% of the time? The Roberts flap about his Federalist Society membership brings that question into stark contrast.
I don't really know and I don't even care that much at this moment how involved he was in that Society. What I do care is that he obtained a retraction from a WaPo writer who mentioned his membership in a 2001 piece even though he had been on the local steering committe of the Society just 3 years earlier. I care even more that such practices are business as usual for this WH.
My wife and I watched Matthew Cooper on Charlie Rose last night. Cooper stated that, before his infamous chat w/ Rove, he didn't even know Joe Wilson HAD a wife. It's relatively clear at this point that Cooper didn't discuss welfare reform w/ Rove, that he got the leak from Rove, and that Rove has been lying about their discussion.
We also see the latest legal gymnastics being perpetrated to keep the Abu Ghraib photos and video from surfacing. The WH is trying to keep the lid on there b/c they know that there will be a sea change in public opinion if they come out. One can argue that they're not lying here--they admit the explosiveness of this evidence. They just fight like hell to keep it under wraps.
These 3 instances are only a week's work for these people. The bottom line here, accordingly, is that, for 4 1/2 years, this WH has been extraordinarily effective at deceiving the American public. Actually, if you go back to the post election period (in which Roberts played a role) it goes back even further than that. It's astounding how the putative party of Lincoln has been able to disprove one of his fundamental tenets for so long.
