I won't go into too much detail (you can read about it at
The Register and
Slashdot, and probably other sites as well), but I was amused by Microsoft's bitter comments about iTunes and the iTunes Music Store.
The FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) that Microsoft is trying to spread is that by choosing iTunes, the poor Windows user is limiting his choice of music to only what Apple offers. That, and apparantly they are complaining that iTunes is a "closed system".
I think the executives are scared, so scared that they are spreading thiese falsehoods. To the best of my knowledge, iTunes is not exclusive, i.e. it can live on a computer side-by-side with the Windows Media Player and its proprietary WMA files, with WinAmp, and with any amount of other player programs. It may only have one online store to shop from, but it happily accepts CD's, MP3 files and online radio stations.
Microsoft is scared. Expect nastiness soon.
