School shooting in Red Lake, Minnesota. Eight dead, kids's grandparents, a teacher, a security guard and some students including the presumed shooter. 14 injured, two critical.
My main concern, aside from the pain of the families and the community, is that these murders will ignite another "kids are out of control" media frenzy like we saw in the 1990s. While these events are horrific, kids are approximately 100 times more likely to be killed by a parent or caregiver than to die in a school from ANY cause (in the USA). Through a lot of hard work, schools have become safer almost every year since the 1970s.
That doesn't even count the thousands of kids who in their despair turn their violence on themselves, or all the children who are abused short of death.
If you are moved to create a remembrance of the children killed in school shootings, may I suggest a donation to the organizations in your community that are fighting domestic violence and child abuse?
