In the world of Romney-endorsed Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, pregnancy resulting from rape is “a gift from God.” Let’s play that out in an example:
I have two young-adult daughters. In the event, God forbid, that one of them was raped, she would not have the right to obtain emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy from occurring, even in the immediate aftermath of the incident. Nor, because Romney and Ryan and Mourdock want Roe v. Wade overturned, could she obtain an abortion even in the first trimester of her pregnancy. She would be forced to completely upend her own life, to take it in a direction she never intended or wanted, all because Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin and Paul Ryan believe that the rape-caused pregnancy is a “gift from God.”
And I, as the father of that sweet, intelligent, dynamic daughter, would be left to tell her that, “the United States government, in its majesty, has determined that – regardless of what you believe, dear – rape-caused pregnancy is a gift from God. I can’t help you. Your mother can’t help you. You can’t help you. Your own beliefs don’t matter. How this may damage your life, your relationships, your emotional and physical health, doesn’t matter. You may not believe that God wanted you to be compelled to carry your rapist’s child to term, but I am so sorry -- Richard Mourdock’s views of God trump yours. I’d like to be able to help you heal, but God and Richard Mourdock say that I can’t.”
Tell me how this differs from the Taliban?
