This is just weird: at a fundraiser in Washington last night, this is what Bill Marriott came up with to demonstrate Mitt's spirit of generosity and service. This is from the Washington Times, so it must be true, right? (Picked up in Mike Allen's Politico Playbook):
"Bill Marriott, chairman ... of Marriott [International], introduced Romney. Marriott shared stories about how they have been family friends for decades. This is one of his tales:
"'Both Mitt and I have summer places up in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee. And a few summers ago I was taking my grandchildren and children to town in the boat for ice cream. And we got into the docks and they were all full and I looked around, there was no place to park, so we stopped at the end of a dock. They all jumped off and ran up the dock. And I realized there was nobody in the boat to help me dock the boat, handle the ropes, do anything - they just left me out there at sea. So I finally found a place to park after about 20 minutes, and I pulled in, I said, 'Who's going to grab the rope?,' and I looked up and there was Mitt Romney. So he pulled me in, he tied up the boat for me. He rescued me just as he's going to rescue this great country.'"
Can't you just see it? Bill Marriott bobbing helplessly in his boat, tempest-toss'd, while his kids and grandkids ran to get ice cream. All of a sudden, here's Mitt, "grabbing the rope," and saving Bill from certain inability to successfully dock his boat on his own, abandoned as he was by his own kids and grandkids. Behaving like the 47%.
If that doesn't speak to Mitt's character and generosity, at least to one of "our crowd" as opposed to "those people," I don't know what does. Helping another rich guy tie up his boat DOES show he can "rescue" this great country! I'll bet he'd gladly share the Grey Poupon too.
