This is a diary about the extraordinary and seemingly endless fight one man, who in all likelihood was the victim of tragedy himself in the sudden loss of his wife, has had to endure thanks to the environment created by the witch hunt mindset of unchallenged Republican domination at the county government level.

The fact that this is taking place one county removed from where I live literally has made me question whether to take the chance of driving into the county on the occasions when it might be necessary or convenient.

The plight is that of Ryan Widmer in Warren County, Ohio, who has twice now been put on trial for the drowning death of his wife, Sarah, in 2008. He could still yet face a third trial. The county prosecutor's office has zealously pursued these charges despite the fact that all they have to present is a loosely concocted theory which has no physical evidence to support it.

Sorry, I usually try and refrain from "rant" mode, but this morning, they've pushed me just a little too far.

(And, before we really get started, here's a side observation -- has anyone noted the brilliance, in all seriousness, of Republican strategists? They may not be any good at governing, but the Rove clones sure know how to identify an issue that can cloud everything by putting blood in the water. And that's exactly what they've done here, creating a mini-shitstorm on a ridiculous issue that is going to crest on the day before Obama speaks to Congress on healthcare, one of the most important moments of his young presidency. In doing so, they greatly cripple the chances he can forge goodwill from anyone on the fence by forcing people into a "us vs. them" mindset on the eve of the speech.)

So, on to protecting the thought integrity of wingnuts...

With a little moxie and enough spin, anyone can play the victim in today's America. Testing the limits of this theory today are our latest contestants, the much-suffering hedge fund industry.

Prominent fund manager Cliff Asness, speaking for the financially loaded but politically oppressed everywhere, is putting his mouth where his money used to be, claiming that our new president is mad with power because he had the gall to draw the line a little short of the ultimate demands of the money men that derailed the whole Chrysler rescue.

Tech Ticker quotes Asness as saying:

"The President screaming that the hedge funds are looking for an unjustified taxpayer-funded bailout is the big lie writ large. Find me a hedge fund that has been bailed out. Find me a hedge fund, even a failed one, that has asked for one. In fact, it was only because hedge funds have not taken government funds that they could stand up to this bullying. The TARP recipients had no choice but to go along."

Rock-n-roll legend Peter Frampton is pissed, for the same reason a lot of the rest of us are: idiots keep stealing his Obama/Biden signs out of his yard!

Frampton lives here in our fair town after marrying a girl originally from Cincinnati. Unfortunately, they've settled in high brow Indian Hill, which is the same zip code that gave more money to Dubyah's re-election campaign than any other zip code in the country.

Frampton has been a good citizen in the time he has lived here, participating in a good many civic endeavors, but he hasn't made a point of being too high profile. As this blog posting notes, he's making an exception now, because he's pissed:

"They are frustrating my attempt to use my First Amendment right to speech and political speech is supposedly the most protected," Frampton said. "It bugs me that people are breaking the law because it bugs them so much."

I have a bit of a situation on my hands as we enter the last week before the election.

I am in a mixed marriage -- that is, I am married to a pretty loyal Republican who comes from a pro-Republican family. She's a wonderful person, but can be hard-headed when it comes to our differences in worldviews.

As we live in a key battleground state, Ohio, I'd obviously love to bring her vote to our side prior to next Tuesday, or, at the very least, get her to consider not voting at all in the presidential race.

The latest (and last) Ohio Newspaper Poll, sponsored by the state's major daily papers, is out today and I believe it is very positive for Obama's hopes in the state.

The poll shows Obama with a 49-46 lead. Granted, that is not as large as the lead shown by some other polling in the state, but in context, this is a good result.

John McCain's Southwest Ohio campaign chairman, who doubles as Hamilton County's prosecutor, is picking up where his buddy Ken Blackwell left off in 2004: trying to use his official office powers to pursue his party's political goals in the statewide presidential election.

This story posted this afternoon by the Cincinnati Enquirer gives the nauseating details about how Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters, no stranger to scandal from his failed stint as Ohio treasurer, has jumped on the ACORN/vote fraud bandwagon by launching his own grand jury investigation.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters, who serves as John McCain’s Southwest Ohio campaign chairman, has requested personal information for some individuals who registered and immediately cast a ballot during a weeklong period that ended earlier this month.

Deters issued a subpoena on Friday for complete registration records for roughly 40 percent of the 671 voters who registered and cast a ballot between Sept. 30, when early voting began, and Oct. 6, the deadline for voter registration.

The AP buries at the bottom of a Palin rally story from this morning this little gem:

Reporters weren't permitted to wander around inside Coachman Park in Clearwater to talk to Palin's audience, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

When reporters tried to leave the designated press area and head to where the crowd was seated, an escort would dart out, confront him or her and say, "Can I help you?" and turn the person around, Times staff writer Eileen Schulte wrote on the paper's Web site. When one reporter asked an escort, who would not give her name, why the press wasn't allowed to mingle, she said that in the past, negative things had been written, Schulte reported.

800 billion dollars. 500 billion dollars. One trillion dollars.

These figures in and amongst themselves don't register with the American people. We can't make sense of them. They are too big to comprehend.

If the Obama campaign can engage in a little bit of translation, though, they could potentially turn this election into a laugher.

I would imagine I am like a lot of voters -- what I knew of Joe Biden in the past came from sound bytes and newspaper stories. I knew who he was, but not much about what defined him.

When he was selected as the running mate last weekend, I thought it a reasonable choice, but maybe not the most exciting option that could have been chosen.

I would amend that opinion after last night.

There is news out this afternoon in the form of an internal report from the Inspector General of the Justice Department that could be particularly politically potent heading into the fall election season.

The Inspector General reviewed the personnel processes in the Department of Justice under Alberto Gonzales and found that politics was inappropriately injected into the process time and again, such as in the infamous dismissals of the nine U.S. Attorneys who were replaced by Rove and Bush minions.

That is not exactly breaking news here at this Web site, but it does hold some wider potential, IMO.
