This latest developement is rather chilling, more so than the typical chilling from the far right. For anyone here tonight but who has been out of touch with humanity for a while, some of the swing states with republican governors and legislatures are proposing to devide their electoral college votes 1 per district........ Granting electoral college votes within a state based on the percentage of the popular vote (you get the same percentage of EC votes as you got in the state popular vote) can at least be given a defense, however weak. But they are going for 1 per district. In this past election using this formula, Romney would have received 13 electoral votes and Obama 7 in Pennsylvania, and Obama won the state popular big. Virignia is tinkering with the idea of doing it too. Wisconsin and Michigan likewise. In the Virginia case they would need a simple signature from a governor who supported device into vagina, willing or not.

These redneck state politicians don't give a shit. They may do it.

I would hope that the reasonable wing of the republican party will finally speak up. It's still a fairly signifigant segment of the party, they are just silent standing before a possible primary challenge from some tea-party christian terrorist. The ones who actually want the House to not allow any debt ceiling extension unless every demand is met. This kind of thing impresses the hooligan party base, who are the lion's share of primary voting.

With this type of creepy power grab attempt by an unpopular party nothing is out of the question. We could be heading to the point where WE may have to start buying semi-automatic military style assault weapons. To protect ourselves from them.

Get me one of those circular ammo drum attachments about the diameter of a basketball.

The Christian terrorists are backing down. Thank God.

President Obama, by clearly and repeatedly saying that he would not negotiate about policy with an opposition using the debt ceiling vote and economic stability as a threat, has taken away the box cutters from the republicans. In fact he did not even let them on the plane.

The republican Christian terrorists are not quite as committed as their siblings--Al-Qaeda. In the fiscal cliff debate recently they allowed the timer to reach one on the countdown, but then pulled the wire out of the plastics package..... So they are prepared to strap the bomb on their person and walk into a public room, but in the end they balked.

Then when stared down by the authorities (Obama) on the latest looming debt ceiling, they seem to have at least temporarily set the bomb down altogether.

To be sure, a substantial segment of conservativism, both within their elected representatives and the rank and file are completely resolved and absolutely in favor of detonation. An even larger segment at least fantasizes about it and enjoys talking about it.

This seems to be the one area where the modern republican party deserves high praise. They have somehow stopped short of replicating Al-Qaeda all the way to the final step. I must re-emphasize, of course, at least for the time being.

The Mullahs of the GOP are just like the Mullahs of Islam. THEY are not suicidal. No fucking way. They cherish their positions of power and all the perks. The suicidal part is left to the pissants. And the pissants of the republican party are doing all they can possibly do in primaries to get a bin-Laden at the top. They don't need the Whitehouse or the Senate. They only need to maintain their party majority in the House (achieved by gerrymandering), and then somehow garner the force to place their own in the leadership positions, who will grant the holy blessing of the bomb exploding.

I think that is highly unlikely. But the Christian terrorists are a hard-working-full-time lot. They never take their eye off the trigger device.

.....after watching Chris Christie deliver his State of the State address that he will win the presidency in 2016. I don't like it but when it comes to predicting you have to call it straight. Cheerleaders and partisans don't predict, they have wet dreams with their eyes crossed.

I make this prediction because, first, I think he will occasionally rebuke the extreme right in the republican primary, as he already has a couple times this far out. He's smart. Second, he will retain the loyalty of the base because on the other hand he will be sufficiently belligerent to the democrats from time to time. Third, he seems to have the capacity to put a state like New Jersey into play in the presidential, which means he may have the ability to do it elsewhere. Like Obama took some places that we are not used to winning. Fourth, in a historical perspective, we have not had more than 8 years in a row in the Whitehouse for a long, long time, and it was the same guy running more than twice.

I believe it's also possible that there will be an added sting for us. I'm not sure Hillary will run but if she does I think Christie will beat her close.

And so the ballsiest, toughest, democrat we have had in our lifetimes will have never made it despite being on the brink twice.

I hope I'm wrong if that helps anyone dying to crap on me.

The sales and orders for the Bushmaster weapon have exploded since the tragedy.

A seriously disturbed and mentally unstable person uses a weapon to kill elementary school children and their teachers.

And a certain kind of person reacts by rushing out to purchase that exact gun.

That's not quite as ill as the shooter, but it's very, very ill.

The police have remained impressively firm in their decision to not answer many basic questions and intend to release their evidence all at once in a final report down the line. This may be the proper approach, although it can frustrate the media and certainly opens up speculation by citizens. But they can't say everyone shut up until the report.

So I offer my speculation. I base it on tidbits that media personnel claim to have sniffed out, or by direct witness testimony to the media. None of this makes any single item absolutely true but there is a possibility, and more than a slight one, that the situation we are dealing with is as follows..............

The mother was aware of problems that her son was having. What she was noticing over time grew to the stage that she felt the need to start thinking of having her son committed. And said that to him, angering him. During this period that the mother was observing the problems increase, one or more of the mother-decided bonding outings with her son was trips to the gun range--or maybe, worse still, his individual trips to the gun range condoned by her. From the point of the mother deciding to possibly commit her son and the shooting is a time frame of undetermined length as of now. Whatever it was, she spent the last two days out of town before the shooting.

So we have the mother considering committing her son who has growing to the point of serious problems. She sees his bad reaction to that. Then she spends time out of town with him in his, by this time, regular basement habitat. With the household arsenal kept in a container in that basement. Where the walls are covered by pictures of war, violence, and guns.

The term "negligence" would not seem to be strong enough here, if these are the facts. Whatever are the proper word or words that would adequately describe this situation, if there are any, I submit that a profanity or two added for emphasis, is a must to even get it in the ballpark. And a word or two about stupidity as well, almost rising to the level of being complicit.

Spare Us The Embarrassment.

Please, please, please spare us the embarrassment of a weeks long congressional fight about gun control, both sides sending their members one after another to the podium offering their hot-air to their bases. Then everyone holds their breath for the final vote---- to see if 20 or 30 specific kinds of weapons are banned, leaving hundreds with nearly identical firepower alone. Or to determine how many bullets a legal clip can hold----hoping for a bunch instead of a bigger bunch.

Can we shame, or kiss the butts, or intellectually convince enough republicans in the House to pass this breathtaking and daring legislation?

The entire thing is a fucking embarrassment to the country. I'm begging our side's representatives not to put us through this humiliation, if those are the only changes on the bill.

The idea that we can do something to prevent this from happening again is fantasyland. Even the idea that we can do something to make it less likely is dubious at best.

On the left we must be rational in any political reaction to this tragedy. First if anyone is calling for handguns to be made illegal, that would be an asinine and utterly hopeless lost cause. It's some sort of desperate grasping for some grand final political victory over the right wing in the gun matter. It ain't ever going to happen. Period.

What we are dealing with here is a human mind snapping in an environment where a negligent dimwit (alleged head of the household) had guns that were known about and easily accessible. And, unless they were a total moron (which is a distinct possibility), had to have at least suspected to some degree that there was a person present with some problems. I'd very much like to hear, and respond to, any legislative proposals to prevent this.

Other than, of course, the hopeless making of guns illegal for everyone.

There has been some skuttlebutt, amongst conservatives from some swing states, to award electoral college votes, one to the winner of each district. Not even the more restrained awarding of them in equal relation to the popular vote outcome. This could possibly lead to the winner of a state's popular vote getting about one third of the electoral college votes, as they would have in Pennsylvania this year. I doubt the obnoxious and disliked losers would actually do it, although it's now apparent that absolutely nothing is out of the question.

The funny thing is that minus the electoral college system as is, the republicans almost surely would not have had a presidential winner the last 6 cycles. So naturally they contemplate adjusting it in a manner that would be even more capable of producing a winner from an unpopular party with unpopular and proven detrimental policies.

The electoral trumped popular one time, or it well could have been 2 Clinton, 2 Gore, and 2 Obama. And if that had happened it would be absolutely certain that we would not be in the Godforsaken mess we are in today. The electoral college gave us Dubya, the neocon marionette, and we will be paying dearly for that the next decade or more no matter who wins or what they do. The republicans are now in the process of proving that all they need is a gerrymandered produced House majority to fuck things up royally.

The only rational adjustment that should be considered at this point by the entire country is whatever party loses the presidential popular vote, also loses two of their incumbent congressional seats from every state. Two of their incumbents that won.

The leaders of the republican party, the political representatives and conservative entertainment complex personalities, have become so consistently hypocritical it seems that it must be intentional. When you got that at the top it's easy to see how a FrankensteinHooliganParanoiacJuvenile base can be created and nurtured. One example amidst the avalanche being that the healthcare individual mandate was their idea, screaming personal responsibility, then down the road when mandates are proposed and passed, they are erupting about unconstitutional, even after the court found it constitutional.

The latest example is the republican outcry that Obama and the democrats need to forget the election, it's over, stop campaigning. They are offended by Obama's rallying of the public in the current debate.

These are the same vile twits who are still having wet dreams about Ronald Reagan's election 30 years ago. And they rehash with lust Reagan's ability to go over the heads of Congress and media and go straight to the people.

The clincher when looking at today's fiscal negotiations, is looking back to the words of Dick Cheney, another darling of the base.........."Reagan proved deficits don't matter."

I've been watching the republican party and it's various factions closely since the election, particularly the last few days, and the hypothetical question has occured to me--what person picked from history would be the most appropriate choice to lead them at this moment?

I submit the Reverend Jim Jones of the People's Temple, Jonestown Guyana. Calling the rank-and-file to the pavillion, the lieutenants preparing the vats and syringes.

And finally the actual words of the real Jones at the grand ceremony......

"For some months I've tried to keep this thing from happening. But I now see it's the will--it's the will of Sovereign Being that this happen to us. That we lay down our lives to protest against what's being done. For God's sake, let's get on with it. We've lived--we've lived as no other people lived and loved. I saw Senator Patty Murray yesterday say that let's go ahead and do what both sides want--tax cuts for the 98 percent....and then go to work on negotiations and compromise on the other stuff where there are differences. I've seen President Obama and other leading democrats say the same thing.

I think this is in error. The republicans in government can have the tax cuts for the 98 percent tomorrow by noon if they so desire. And they do not choose to have it. They do not want A, unless it is accompanied by B and C heading toward Z.

Whatever that is, it is not REALLY wanting something or being in full agreement with it. So let's not give them a big undeserved break and pretend that it is in our talking points.
