Here we go again.

Typhoon Hagupit (Tagalog for "lash") is headed DIRECTLY for the very areas hit by Yolanda a year ago. Eastern Samar Island, a rural area which borders Leyte Island and was severely devastated last year, will bear the brunt of first landfall.

It's a Category 4, not as extreme as Yolanda, but still expected to affect 30 million people.

Please keep the Philippines in your thoughts and prayers. People will need help, I know this. Maps and more below the jump.

A few friends and I are supporting recovery work in the Philippines via holiday sales of our cards, music, jewelry and tshirts. Please consider channel your holiday shopping into much needed recovery work, while getting hand letterpressed cards + beautiful presents for your loved ones. Every bit we can raise is truly appreciated, both by us and communities in the Philippines.

On a side note, I've raised $515 so far in sales for Bantayan Island. My friend Martha, whose family I'm channeling the money through (they are long-time supporters of livelihood + empowerment projects on Bantayan and I trust them), was overwhelmed with emotion. That is enough to put roofs on 5 houses in Bantayan. I don't consider $515 to be a huge amount, but it goes a long long way in the Philippines.

A powerful read from a friend in New York, Bino Realuyo. "Resilient" and "survivors" are often used to describe Filipinos, and there are layers to unpack in that idea. Surviving the Marcoses. Surviving political theft that gives new meaning to the idea of the "1%." Surviving life in the "Ring of Fire," where rebuilding is a way of life. Surviving migration and culture shock, in a diaspora some 11 million large, in every corner of the globe.

Snapshot from Northern Cebu

My heart sinks to read of the chaos + desperation in Leyte, with lack of security bottlenecking aid efforts to the hungry and trapped. But I'm sharing a couple bright spots, photos from two efforts making headway.

1. Market Manila + ZubuFoods Relief Run
This is from a Cebu family. The dad, Joel, has a popular food blog called Market Manila, and also runs a chain of restaurants. He, his family, and staff have been taking donations and organizing their own run through Northern Cebu (blocked roads were cleared, so aid can penetrate, unlike on Leyte).

I'm gathering relief info for the Philippines in this diary, post-Typhoon Yolanda / Haiyan. If you have other info, share in the comments and I'll update it.

And please donate. Sadly, it's the most vulnerable who were hit by Typhoon Yolanda / Haiyan in the Philippines. The poorest provinces of the Visayas (Leyte, Samar, and smaller, outlying islands), without stockpiled food or water, or strong housing. The islands of Bohol and Cebu were still recovering from a major earthquake just last month, with 5,000 people on Bohol living in tents BEFORE the storm.

Seven years ago I was voting in a primary election for New York City's mayor. I lived in Soho at the time, with the Twin Towers in full view (just 2 miles to the south, looming up high in the sky).

Over the conversation I was having with one of the poll workers on Sullivan Street, I heard what I thought was a military jet flying overhead (because it was so loud), then a metallic thud like the sound a garbage truck makes.

Suddenly I was on the set of a Hollywood disaster movie, people in unison staring upwards at the same spot, saying "Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God." A woman in a bathrobe and bare feet stumbling out of her building to with her professional photography equipment to take pictures. Everyone horrified at the sight of a smoking hole in one of the Trade Towers against a perfect blue sky.

Surreal.

We didn't know then that there would be a second plane within the hour. What a second plane would signify. What would follow.

Long-time lurker here. Forgive my stating the obvious when I say that Clinton! Obama! The Drama! is sucking all the air out of the room.

My diary is going to echo other more literate voices on DailyKos when I say: a) picking a President will not fix all our problems, b) the energy of this election is rare. This is a golden moment to capitalize on a fired-up Democratic base to pick up seats across the country to strengthen our party in Congress. This opportunity may not come again in a long time.

So I need your help. You smart, wonky, geeky Kossacks who follow politics far more closely than I and have all that useful knowledge that political geeks tend to have. Follow me! Questions below the fold.
