I was just about to write this diary and what do you know, Kos puts up a post about the Pledge of Allegiance.
Nevertheless, I think it's really important to stress this notion every time one of these weasels (Beck, Perry, etc.) tries to whip up secessionist sentiment to score political points.
Remember how hard the rightwingers came down on Obama for not holding his hand to his heart in one purported instance of reciting the pledge? (An instance debunked here.) Well secession is far, far worse.
The Pledge of Allegiance is an oath. A sacred one. Either you mean it, or you don't. If you recite the pledge but you start talking about splitting up the republic for which the flag stands, then you are basically an oathbreaker. Got that? OATHBREAKER. Meaning, you don't keep promises. Question to the Texas and Georgia Republicans: Are you serious about your allegiance, or is this a temporary convenience while a new Confederacy gets organized?
And next time Matthews has Perry on the show, maybe he can ask him about how serious he is when he recites the Pledge. I can't wait to see him wriggle out of that one.
update: thanks newyorknewyork. Old age blah, blah, blah...
