Due to some questions that arose recently regarding my son’s registration status here in North Carolina, I decided to put together a 50 state guide to help people determine if they are registered to vote. Most states have an easy online tool that can tell you your status. I had written a comment in a diary the other day and someone suggested I write a diary. Here is the comment:
An interesting side note. We live in NC, my son graduated from college and got a note from the board of elections saying he needed to register at his new address because he registered at college (and voted four years ago). He downloaded the form, filled it out, including his license number. Two weeks later he got his voter registration card, thinking everything was taken care of. A few days after his voter registration card came he got another mailing from the NC board of elections stating they could not verify his identity because he was a first time voter and did not provide the necessary documentation. He is not a first time voter, he voted once already.
I looked at the form. It wanted him to submit 1. proof of residency (either through a bill with the address or a copy of his license), 2. his drivers license number, 3. the last four digits of his SS#. In the middle of the body of the letter was a large boxed out area stating that it was a felony to submit false data and listed the penal code under which they could prosecute. The whole thing was a head scratcher because he had already provided the information the first time he voted, and then his license number with the proper form filled out the second time.
He went ahead and provided all the information again and sent it in. My feeling on the matter is that college students or recent grads are being targeted with extra hoops to jump through in the hope that they neglect to follow up, or are confused and think they are registered. Then come election day they will be told that there is something amiss with their registration.
For anyone not sure about their registration, call your board of elections and ask if you are registered.
I felt with all the purging and dirty tricks going on, people should really check their status to verify that indeed they are registered. Hope this is helpful.
