I, way back 40 years or so ago, was a member of two teams:
1) Forensics: I wrote and delivered informative speeches, The main one I wrote and delivered was on infamous mass murders, My friends and I, people I still hang out with since back then, still recall the opening line of my speech because it was so bad:
Whitman, Unruh, Desalvo, Speck, Huberty…..do these names mean anything to you? They should make you shutter. All were infamous mass murderers,
Needless to say I did not advance far.
Usually though my main focus was on
2) Policy debate. Each year we had a topic, like water pollution, and we were on the Affirmative (The present system is bad and we have a plan to fix it and the Negative that basically argued that the status quo was either OK or that the Affirmative plan would make everything a lot worse.
I was OK in debate, finishing with a 500 win/loss record. I went on a few years post high school graduation as a debate judge. A great job with decent money.
Beyond debate and forensics I was a lonely Jew, in the Latin club. :)
We had to take a foreign language and I have always had extreme difficulty speaking and learning a language, so I took Latin not having to worry as much about conversations and a lot of words had similar connections to English words.
How about you? Did you belong to any teams or clubs in High School?
