So I'm teaching my environmental science class yesterday at one of the two colleges where I teach the subject. Ironically, because we're in Michigan and the Flint water crisis is ongoing, we're covering the chapter on environmental ethics, economics, and justice (or the lack thereof).
This engendered a lot of discussion, of course. I had originally planned to split the chapter into two days of class, but the discussions on the first day, before we even got started on the lecture, consumed the entire lecture period. Smart kids, excellent discussions; I was impressed by their knowledge, frankly.
Somehow, yesterday, politics in a more specific sense came up and Hillary was mentioned. Her name was met by jeers and derision to the extent that I was, frankly, shocked. So I decided to check it out and asked who, among the class of 20 supported Hillary. The response was zero. I asked who among the class would vote for her if she was the nominee; again ZERO. One student spoke up to say that they were all either "feeling the Bern" or were Trump supporters, to rousing agreement from the entire class. My impression, although I didn't ask for a show of hands, was that the Bernie supporters outnumbered the Republicans by a few students.
As I continued the discussion about why they don’t support Clinton it became clear that they were all aware of Hillary's big money connections, they brought up her lying about being under fire on the airport tarmac, they had seen the videos of her saying one thing and then turning around and saying the opposite, etc., etc., all the things that have been getting pointed out on DKos and being downplayed by Hillary’s supporters.
Granted this was only 20 students in one class at a small Michigan college, but I think there is a lesson to be learned here. These students all plan to vote and ZERO of them plan to vote for Hillary because of her actions and statements.
One of our candidates is fatally flawed and that candidate is NOT Bernie Sanders. It is the oligarch.
I'm still recovering from pneumonia and have barely been able to teach my classes, so I'll respond as time permits if there is any interest in this diary.
