Rep. Richard "Doc" Hastings has demonstrated once again his complete lack of interest in supporting people in his own district by casting his NO vote against a bill that will provide assistance to states to save teachers, firefighters, police and first responders, from layoffs, which would force them onto unemployment insurance benefits, despite the fact that Congress included in the bill, a mechanism that would pay for the measure and not add to the deficit.

One year ago, nobody in the State of Washington (outside of my family and friends) knew who I was. I committed myself to spending every free minute of my time traveling across Central Washington, attending Democratic functions, and surrounding myself with smart, capable people. For the past two months, oil has been gushing into the Gulf of Mexico thousands of barrels at a time. as Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee, Representative Hastings had the power to prevent this. Instead, in this election alone, Rep. Hastings has taken $26,272 from the oil industry, and you can be sure that this next report will show an even higher number. Let’s show Hastings that he doesn’t get to be in the pocket of Big Oil and still claim to represent the interests of hardworking, middle-class families in this district.

There has been no more favorite punching bag for many folks on the political left than Sarah Palin. I certainly am not a fan of many of her political opinions, but so much of the criticism has occasionally struck me as unnecessarily personal, and plain nasty. I would like to remind people that this woman got elected a mayor, a Governor, and received a major party Vice Presidential nomination. She fills venues with excited, cheering crowds like few others. In fact, the last politician to show that kind of huge, adoring public support is now our President. That is no small political achievement, and making fun of her manner, dress, education or family cannot erase these facts. That being said, I could never support Sarah Palin for any office, because she is acting like a political coward, and none of us can afford to be led by people who refuse to be questioned by their ideological opponents.

In the Othello Outlook earlier this week, Rep. Richard Hastings has posted an opinion piece on the Gulf oil disaster. I agree with almost everything he says, especially the parts about holding those responsible accountable, making sure that BP covers all the costs of this ecological nightmare, and pressuring the government and the industry to do all it can to mitigate the damage and working to reform safety rules to prevent such calamities in the future. What our Congressman is conveniently quiet about is the fact that oversight of offshore drilling is the duty of the House Natural Resources committee. The committee that Rep. Hastings sits on. The committee that Hastings is the ranking member of.

As hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil are fouling the Gulf region, now is the time to seriously reexamine who is ultimately responsible for the "drill, baby, drill" consequences we now face. If we consider offshore drilling important to our domestic energy supply, we must also accept the occasional unwanted consequences and the accompanying environmental damage as the cost of doing business. But whose business is getting done?
When Toyota makes a mistake, the government is quick with hearings and fines, as they should be, and Toyota knows that they are completely on the hook for whatever damages are suffered by their customers, whether they were caused by accidents in manufacturing, or by design flaws. Why should it be any different for oil companies? Why is it that when oil is being pumped, processed, and sold, and profits are being made, those profits belong to Big Oil, but when they create a disaster, then suddenly it’s "our" oil?

I was pleased to read the 26 page ‘framework’ submitted by Senate Democrats regarding the outlines of a comprehensive Immigration Reform package. It is clear that this is an issue that must be addressed at the federal level, and soon, as the pressure to go down the unfortunate legal path Arizona has chosen becomes greater for other border states.

Doc Hastings makes a startling admission in an interview posted on the website OthelloOutlook.com on April 20, 2010. Here’s the quote while talking about the costs of health care reform:
"Last year was the first time I ever even used the word trillion," Hastings said.
Perhaps that day wouldn't have come so late in Hastings' life if he had used his 8-terms worth of seniority to get on the Budget Committee, the Appropriations Committee, or any of the other committees that he has chosen not to sit on. This nation's GNP has been in the trillions for decades. Can Hastings be as out of touch with the macro-economics of our country as he is with the economics of our district?

I read with amusement a story in the Tri-City Herald on Friday regarding Congressman Richard Hastings holding one of his “signature” hour-long town hall meetings last Thursday in Zillah, WA. I am trying to remember the last election season that Hastings has held a town hall…anywhere in the district. Rep. Hastings has been like the Ghost of Politicians Past the last 3 election cycles---mostly not visible, but pops up here and there for a brief visit, then back to wherever he hides the rest of the time. So what causes the Champion of the Oil and Gas Lobby to start acting like a real pol again, I wonder? Maybe it’s the Tea Party activists, or---just maybe---it’s me.
