By now, every Kossack will have heard about the tragic case of Germanwings Flight 9525, which was deliberately crashed by its co-pilot Andreas Lubitz in an act of murder-suicide. I will not dwell on the details of this horrific case so much as on the reaction to it, or, rather what was missing from that reaction.
If you think back to the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines flight a year ago, the media was just rife with speculation linking the disappearance to terrorism. Media figures guessed the flight had been hijacked, or even forced to land and its passengers taken hostage. All of this speculation was based on the flimsiest of evidence.
At the same time, even though we know that Flight 9525 was deliberately crashed, there has been very little speculation about terrorism. The authorities ruled it out after only forty-eight hours, while the media spent very little time offering up far fetched theories.
My Gut Reaction: Did it have something to do with the fact that the co-pilot had a name like Andreas Lubitz? Hmm, I wonder....
