2 U.S. Senators want to stop bars from staying open late during Obama's inauguration.

Yesterday, a petition launched urging DC mayor Adrian Fenty not to give in.

It made huge waves. Washingtonian, DC'ist, Calitics, and others all wrote about the people-powered petition. A Facebook group quickly gained lots of people.

Outrage! From the New York Times:

Citing security concerns, two senators who sit on the Congressional committee in charge of inaugural ceremonies appealed on Tuesday to the mayor and city council of Washington, D.C., to reverse a decision to keep bars in the city open until 5 a.m. during inauguration week.

One senator leading the charge is Robert Bennett of the anti-drinking Utah, so at least that makes sense. The other is Dianne Feinstein from California -- what the heck's up with that?

Hundreds of people are signing the Bold Progressives pledge by the day.

And the need for bold progressivism has never been higher. We all heard the news yesterday: despite the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street (intended to "restore confidence in the markets"), the stock market had another drop of historic proportions.

Trust in traditional institutions is at an all-time low. In 2009, we can restore confidence in our democracy by pushing the Democratic Party to truly represent the will of the people by enacting a bold progressive agenda on the issues that matter most.

I signed the pledge to be part of the movement to make that happen. Have you?

There's a new pledge that several major blogs will be asking Democratic voters to take. It's at www.boldprogressives.org

The premise: Vote Dem in 2008, but Democratic voters across the country are pledging that in 2009 we will demand bold progressive leadership. If Dem leaders won't be progressive, we'll help replace them as leaders. We won't blindly cut checks to the Democratic Party -- we'll channel our money to strong fighters. This isn't about those of us who already do this. It's about reaching our friends and family who may instinctively support the Democratic Party, but in recent days have come to realize that not all Democrats are progressive.

There is unparalleled sexism going on the presidential race. Today, while talking to NBC's Chuck Todd, Orrin Hatch used the dreaded "H" word.

A historical note to put this in perspective: No Democrat has even been so brazen as to use this against Republican candidates. They didn't say it about John McCain. Or George W. Bush. Or Bob Dole. Now that it's out, is there any way to put this horrific genie back in the bottle?

Republicans, please: stop the sexism.

Today's Washington Post headline reads, "With Pick, McCain Reclaims His Maverick Image."

When I read that, I thought, "Really?" But when I read the article, that's actually not what it said. It said he's attempting to "recapture" his maverick image -- which is correct, he lost it.

This morning, long-time Saturday Night Live writer Jim Downey was on MSNBC and was asked which candidate was funniest. He immediately said Obama. Then he explained that when interacting with Obama, he's just "a cool guy." Then after an explanation of the others he re-iterated, Obama's the funniest. Here's the clip:

Why is this relevant? Because the presidency is a large degree about personality and communications ability. If people actually want to turn on TV to see their president speak -- and if people on Capitol Hill want to bask in the presence of presidential coolness -- that's relevant to getting the job done.

I know that in this era of impending unity, we're supposed to throw in the obligatory, "But Clinton's personable and funny too." Nope...not the way Obama is. Obama has a gift of communicative ability and coolness that she simply doesn't have.

This is huge. Russert says definitively, "We now know who the Democratic candidate is going to be." He also reveals Clinton has canceled all morning interviews and campaign appearances tomorrow.

Wow. Everyone should see this video. It's over. There should be no opportunity given to Clinton to pull a Lieberman now. This wisdom from Russert should be the conventional wisdom. If you agree, please recommend.

What the heck is wrong with Harry Reid?

He was on the Daily Show tonight. As Jon Stewart asked him the first couple question, Reid just stared speechless at Stewart. Like weak tea.

Stewart asked the origins of Reid's new book. Reid went on some weird "The people of Nevada don't know me" pre-rehearsed non sequitur. (Only Harry Reid can put himself on the defensive!)

Stewart remarked that Reid was known for strength (he is?) but that he was rather quiet right now. Reid remained quiet. Stewart then asked if he could filibuster Reid (given his quietness), to which Reid haplessly replied, "Everyone else has." (How is he our leader!)

Stewart then asked if we are in a holding pattern in the Senate with the presidential candidate on the campaign trail. Reid said we've been in a holding pattern since Dems took over Congress -- but instead of taking on the Republicans, he whined about how their majority is too slim, how Tim Johnson was sick, etc.

NOT ONCE DID HE SAY ANYTHING AGAINST MCCAIN OR REALLY ON MESSAGE ABOUT WHY PEOPLE SHOULD VOTE DEMOCRATIC THIS YEAR. Harry Reid - why is he such a dud?

We learned today that Hillary Clinton will grace Bill O'Reilly's program tomorrow. But when TPM's Greg Sargent asked if she'd take on Fox, the Clinton campaign responded: "That's not the plan."

So basically, Hillary Clinton will go into the belly of the beast with a pro-active determination to NOT fight back? That serves one purpose and one purpose only: To legitimize Fox! And worse, to legitimize O'Reilly as a credible asker of questions!

Please recommend this diary and vote in the poll below to send a signal to Clinton's campaign that willfully capitulating to Fox is unacceptable. Tell her and all other Democratic leaders watching: Legitimizing O'Reilly is wrong. Take them on!

Below are some videos of Democrats who DID fight back on Fox - actively telling Fox that the premises of their question are rigged and framed to advance a Republican agenda. Below are also some facts showing that Fox has almost no audience, and the audience they do have is not comprised of sway'able voters.

Ok, this is really weird. Today, Bush National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley was on Fox talking about whether Bush would boycott the Olympics' opening ceremony, and talked about the issue of "Tibet." Later the same morning he went on ABC and discussed the same issue, but he consistently talked about "Nepal."

(As Think Progress and CrooksandLiars point out, these are 2 distinct places.) Very curious -- is Hadley just a moron? Or is there some diplomacy reason that someone would tell him to actively switch from "Tibet" to "Nepal" between shows?
