Dissecting Right Wing Rhetoric - Diary Series

I'd like to invite contributions to a diary series focused on dissecting right wing rhetoric. Ideally, I'd like to publish at least one diary a week that examines current catch phrases, memes, and arguments from the right, with the intention of framing counter-arguments and rebuttals for use by liberal and progressive journalists, analysts, and activists. The goal is to compile a rich resource that we can use to support our current and future political and activist work.

If you're working on issues related to right wing rhetoric, or if you want to discuss current instances of right wing rhetorical framing of particular issues, I'd be very interested in hearing from you. I'm envisioning this as not only a diary series, but as the foundation for developing an extensive online resource (perhaps in wiki format) on right wing rhetoric.

You can follow the Right Wing Rhetoric group if you want to read the series, or you can request to join the group if you think you will want to contribute to the series.

Yes, you've heard me correctly - Fox News SUPPORTS President Obama's call to end oil subsidies.

In fact, that very thing was just reported on the front page of Daily Kos by Jed Lewison, albeit with a bit of misleading title:

Okay, here are the facts:

• Last month, President Obama has proposed ending big oil subsidies.

• This week, Congressional Democrats voted to end big oil subsidies.
• And this week, House Republicans unanimously voted to protect big oil subsidies.
And in a web feature titled "It's All Your Money: Paying for Energy Subsidies," here's what Fox has to say about those facts:

Here's a look at some subsidies in President Obama's 2012 Fiscal Year budget:

• $126 million for wind
• $340 million for bio fuels
• $457 million for solar
• $452 million clean coal
• $800 million for nuclear

Oil and gas get even more of your money through tax incentives, deductions, depreciation and investment credits. Those total about $3.6 billion a year, according to the Administration.

So Fox caps off a list of energy subsidies proposed by President Obama with the mother of all subsidies: $3.6 billion to oil and gas companies.

See? Fox is actually supportive of the call to end subsidies.

CNN Tea Party It's bad enough that America has one Fox News. One network that has mainstreamed lying and abandoned all journalistic ethics in favor of spreading propaganda and nurturing ignorance. Now it appears that CNN has aspirations to out-Fox Fox. They put out a press release announcing some new hires:

"CNN is gearing up for the election season with the addition of political contributors from across the ideological spectrum. Democratic strategist Cornell Belcher, conservative commentator Will Cain, and local Tea Party leader and radio talk show host Dana Loesch will appear across the network's prime time programs, as well as other dayparts and platforms."

Dana Loesch? Are you F@%KING kidding me?

"Blood Libel" -- Another Right Wing Effort to Twist and Corrupt Language

Sarah Palin's use of "blood libel" is not only inappropriate and offensive, as Jewish groups across the nation are pointing out. It's also part of a deliberate right wing strategy to stake claim to all of the terminology used to describe the oppressive systems that the right supports, and to turn those words around in order to claim that the oppressors are the "real" victims.

Given our shellacking in the recent elections, it's clear we need to rethink our media policy. If the Republicans can get elected on hate and obstructionism, then we're obviously not getting our message across. This diary offers some suggestions (and Republican comparisons) towards that end.

For the last several years I've been collecting material for a book project on right wing rhetoric and thought. I figure DK is a good place to share some of my reflections as my work progresses. I'm primarily a theoretician, and that's the perspective I offer. Others are doubtless better historians and more talented political analysts. As a theoretician, I'm interested in categorization and differentiation between progressive and right wing perceptions and world-views, and this requires I speak in generalities when assessing group behavior. As such, I'm uninterested in individual exceptions to rules, but quite happy if you can contest my point of view with a preponderance of evidence that suggests I reformulate a categorical distinction.
