RI State Police to join NSA

Today the Boston Globe has an article describing a bill currently before the Rhode Island General Assembly that grants the RI State Police access to Internet and phone records and credit card and bank information without a warrant or other court review.

This is amazing in light of the response to the NSA domestic spying scandal. What is worse is that in RI a similar bill has already passed the state Senate!

I've just returned from a fund raiser at a friends house for Sheldon Whitehouse. I think he has a strong chance of defeating Lincoln Chafee in '06 and was encouraged by the comments he made. One strong consideration for us in RI is that Sen. Chafee is the kind of old school republican that is not bad. He draws a significant number of cross-over voters. Sheldon was asked about that and had a good answer. He said that Rhode Islanders needed to look at the bigger picture and not make this a 'local' issue. We'll see how that answer carries over the next year but it shows he is aware of that.

Hope to continue working with him on his campaign as this seat could be a key one working toward an '06 change in the Senate.
