This election cycle, I am a single-issue voter: equality for LGBT people. I supported Bernie Sanders in the primary, but he isn't on the ballot. There are only two candidates on the ballot with a chance of becoming our next president.
One candidate is not only a dumpster fire of a human being, but is completely unqualified to hold any public office. In addition to the rabidly anti-LGBT people he would bring into office with him (and appoint to the SCOTUS), this candidate has promised to sign into law a "religious freedom" (freedom to discriminate against LGBT people) bill within his first 100 days in office, which would make people like me into third-class citizens. The problem is, one's religious denomination is a CHOICE, while LGBT people are born that way. (I sure as hell didn't choose to be trans, I fought this for 44 years.) If your religion demands that other human beings should have fewer rights than you, then you should probably find a different religion, one that doesn't require you to be an asshole.
The other major candidate is well-qualified based on previous jobs, and has been relentlessly investigated by the opposition party for more than 20 years. Despite all the hatred and innuendo and money spent against her, the most damning "crime" uncovered is that she once used a private email server. Curiously, the same people who are upset about this give a pass to the administration that used a RNC email server, and then “lost” 22 million emails to avoid being investigated. And the same people who are upset about this candidate because four Americans died in Benghazi in 2012 don't seem to care about the 13 embassy attacks and 60 deaths from 2001-2008. Go figure, right?
I have every confidence that this candidate, who would be the first woman elected President of the United States, will appoint judges to the SCOTUS who will rule in favor of equality to LGBT people, based on the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. I have every confidence that under her administration, even transgender Americans will be treated like human beings under the law. We will not be denied housing or healthcare or jobs based on who we are. We will be able to use the bathroom that matches our gender identity, regardless of whether or not we've been able to afford surgery (or want surgery). And under her administration (and a Democratically-controlled Congress, if possible), the gains we've made (marriage equality, etc.) will not be reversed.
