I'm all for Operation Hilarity. What's notable about that, however, is that I had to think about it first. I didn't come into this with a preestablished stance. I figured I would share my rationale.

Fat people.

The bigotry against fat people transcends the political spectrum, and persists here on Daily Kos. I would like for us to become less permissive of that. My reason is simple: Fat people are treated terribly, and do not deserve it.

Do you relate to me, when I tell you that I seldom feel so alienated from my fellow humanity as when I am in the company of allies, with whom I share the bond of a common ideology, and these people suddenly reveal a cruel side of themselves that I never knew was there?

How often I hear the word fat used here against our common enemies, as if their fatness proves their wickedness! How often I see fat people offered as evidence that our country isn’t working right, as if being fat is an inferior way to live! How often I witness fat people slandered outright, blamed for healthcare costs and environmental depletion, and assumed to be stupid or to have no sense of self-respect!

I never feel so unique in the world as when my ideological kin say things like that...and it’s not the kind of uniqueness I relish.

Molly Norris no longer exists. But she isn’t dead. She decided that she values her life more than her name. After receiving death threads and continued harassment, the FBI counseled her to erase her identity and start life over. Her former editor described it as akin to going into the witness protection program, except Uncle Sam doesn’t foot the bill. So ends, in unnecessarily ironic fashion, another flare-up in the struggle between religious tyranny and civil humanism.

Bigotry serves no useful purpose. All it does is foster enmity and cruelty between you and an oppressed class of people. Fat-bashing is bigotry. Don't do it.

Prejudice makes no sense. All it does is enable you to make judgments about people without properly knowing them. Fat-bashing is prejudice. Don't do it.

...more and better Democrats...

To make a long story short, we got more Democrats. It wasn’t easy, but we did it, partly through our own hard work and partly because the corruption and extremism of the conservative movement had come to disgust voters. With good margins in both houses, and the most progressive Democrat in a generation in the White House, it was time to focus on getting better Democrats.

What Israel Should Do

I simply do not understand the rationale on display here. Hamas is a militant and highly popular social movement within the Palestinian Territories. Not only is not going to stop its terrorist activities, but it couldn't if it wanted to. Individual militants will do as they please, and all it takes for a new conflict to erupt is for one militant to be provoked into an act of terrorism. This is what happens when you foster a culture of violence and martyrdom. Hamas is a band of radical ideologues, and nothing Israel can do, short of blinking out of existence, will change that. Imagine if the Republicans had their own armed wing and felt at liberty to enforce their vision. Do you think they would answer to any kind of reason or appeal? No...they would not.

In this diary, I shall deliver a scathing attack on the nation of Israel, a nation which I claim to have supported all my life.

I do this because, contrary to my earlier remarks, I now believe it is very important to be as black and white as possible about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. My goal is to incite more anger, harden the hearts of those who disagree with me, and insult people who come to Daily Kos for intelligent, nuanced discussion with a double helping of my right-wing rhetoric draped in a left-wing cause.

I steadfastly reject the notion that any lasting peace will have to come from the hearts and minds of both sides of the conflict. I steadfastly reject that what needs to happen is that the Palestinians and the Israelis both must decide not to support those who make their point with guns and missiles. Instead, I assert with full confidence that the Israelis are a bunch of murderers with whom no person of good conscience should associate. Furthermore, I have every expectation that my proclamation will help expedite a satisfactory resolution to the conflict.

From the primary election, the bad news:

Darcy Burner: 46,144 votes (44.84 percent)
Dave Reichert: 49,325 votes (47.93 percent)

This is a deficit of 3181 votes. That works out to 3.33 percent of the total votes shared between the two candidates, or, to put it another way, 48.33 percent for Burner and 51.67 for Reichert.

However, these were not the only two candidates competing to represent Washington’s 8th Congressional District. There were four others. I have crunched the numbers from the primary, and, in order to surpass Republican incumbent Rep. Dave Reichert in overall votes, Democratic challenger Darcy Burner would have had to acquire a daunting 71.36 percent of all the other votes cast in this election.

With the nominating contest at an end, I have watched this community's outreach to Clinton supporters with wry disgust. For months we have verbally abused her and her supporters without mercy. Now the contest is over, and we are reaching out to them with an outstretched hand, asking them—expecting them—to return to our side in the name of Democratic unity. We pretend our own abuses never occurred. Even in victory I see our community offer little acknowledgment of its misconduct, and no apologies.
