I don't usually write diaries (I usually post my stuff to edgewise, a political blog I write along with cecil vortex - who does post diaries here more often - and a few other folks, but I thought a little update on my weekend GOTV efforts might be welcome.

All weekend I've been volunteering time for the local Oakland Call for Change phone banking effort sponsored and managed by MoveOn.org. What I've seen so far is a brilliant experiment in managed chaos, as the volunteers take shifts calling other callers to get them to commit and then confirm their commitment to call from home using the awesome web interface or go to house parties to make their calls in a more social setting. I suspect that we (Democrats) don't have an organizing principle but instead a motley set of strongly felt ideals. Because of this, we are rarely able or willing to sacrifice specific issues because we don't have a common goal (aside from opposing Republicans) that we are all willing to sacrifice to achieve.

What is the organizing principle of the party? Social justice? Economic fairness? Liberty? Peace? I'm not sure we'd all agree. Read More

Here in one of the bluest congressional districts (Barbara Lee's) in the bluest region (the Bay Area) of one of the bluest states (California) the poll worker at my voting location told me that the early morning pre-work hours the crowds waiting to vote were huge, with long lines and a lot of patience to go around.

I think this is telling. We know we aren't swinging this election but we are all fired up to be counted. In a day of anecdotal evidence about voter turnout, I thought I'd add my two cents here.

Let's win this for Kerry.

Personal Democracy Forum (disclosure: a site for which I am a contributing editor) has just published a feature that profiles Markos as a sort of cyber- political boss. The article also describes how this site works and quotes a number of old-school political operatives who are uncomfortable with Kos's power and what they see as his unaccountability.

Apologies if this has already been diaried here. I didn't see it in the recent or recommended diaries and I think it's worth reading and discussing, either (or both) here or at the PDF site (which requires free registration, as it runs on Drupal).

After Lieberman dropped, on Feb 4th I asked a simple question and the poll results were reasonably prescient. 146 Kossacks voted, and it came out like this:

Sharpton 3%
Kucinich 8%
Clark 55%
Dean 25%
Edwards 3%
Kerry 3%

Have it once again. It's still a simple question, right?

Apologies if fthis link is a repeat, but it appears that Robert Toricelli, among others, funded the Osama ads against Dean, according to this Washington Post article.

I seem to recall that we were supposed to have access to financial disclosure statements from Q4 2003 as of February 2 that promised to reveal the secret backers of the Osama ad that was run on TV against Dean last fall.

At the time there was rampant speculation, based partly on the presence of ex-Gephardt and ex-Kerry staffers at the nonprofit entity running the ads.

Has anyone done the legwork to track this down? Now that Gephardt has embraced Kerry, if those two really were behind the ad, I'd like to see that info come out. If not, it would be good to clear the air.
