Jim Wright over at Stonekettle Station has put a notice on his Facebook page warning that neither sleet nor hail, tornadoes or hurricanes will stop ICE from doing their appointed duty...nabbing undocumented residents.
Apparently officials have deemed it a good idea to keep the checkpoints open and fully staffed while evacuation goes on...creating choke points on the evac routes. Great idea! Hold up the evacuations while screening carloads of anxious parents with frightened children and pets, putting people at risk...and themselves...while a hurricane approaches!!
And it is likely, hearing that the checkpoints will be staying open, most undocumented residents will choose to stay and hope to survive the coming storm rather than risk being found and deported.
This is NOT the time to be pursuing a political agenda, putting everyone at risk. As Jim puts it:
By regarding a natural disaster as an opportunity to advance a political agenda, we directly risk the lives of human beings -- including the most vulnerable children and elderly.
We risk the lives of emergency personnel, those who will have to go in during the storm and attempt rescue. Likewise we risk critical assets, we put an increased and unnecessary load on already scarce assets in time of crises.
We risk the lives of border patrol, immigration agents, and law enforcement, again, in time of crisis. Law enforcement should be facilitating the evacuation, not slowing it down. They should be waving people through, keeping traffic moving, sending people inland as fast as possible.
We should be getting people out, not scaring them into staying in the storm's path.

Jim also advises that everyone get out of the path of danger, as do I.
Please stay safe, everyone!!!!
