It's an election year, and about damn time! As issues pile up for Democrats to run on in 2018, one stands out as vital to our future, to the future of the basic function of the mechanics of our democracy—net neutrality. Without a free and open internet, our ability to even have grassroots efforts to take our country back is in question. Which is one of the primary reasons why (along with all the corporate money) it's become such a partisan issue for elected Republicans. It's not partisan, however, for the public. Check out this poll from the University of Maryland’s Program for Public Consultation: three out of four Republicans surveyed were opposed to the FCC's rollback of open internet rules.
So this is what we're going to do. The coalition of advocacy groups that worked so hard to get the open internet rules in the first place is going to make net neutrality a core issue for 2018.
But here's the good news: there’s a concrete and simple way that Congress can overrule the FCC’s terrible vote and keep the Internet free and open. Fight for the Future just launched a hard-hitting campaign to make sure that they do. The plan is simple: if they don’t vote for net neutrality in 2018, vote them out.
29 Senators have already signed on to support a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to overturn the FCC’s corrupt repeal of net neutrality. We only need one more Senator to force it to a vote on the floor. Then if it passes the Senate, we’ll have to get a number of Republicans in the House to support it in order to force a vote there. But with 3 out of 4 Republican voters in support of net neutrality and a handful of GOP lawmakers already coming out publicly against the FCC move, that’s increasingly within reach.
Pundits keep asking whether net neutrality is going to be an election issue in 2018. Let's make it one.
Watch for more on this campaign and for other efforts—particularly by the states—to keep the internet free. That includes a number of states suing the FCC as well as exploring establishing their own net neutrality protections for consumers. The states will do their part to keep big telecomm in check. We’ll do our part to elect a new Congress that will make it law.
Trump's FCC and Big Cable are determined to destroy net neutrality—and we’re determined to stop them. Tell Congress to oppose Trump FCC's plan to destroy net neutrality and the open internet.
