Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana is one of the congressional conferees beginning meetings Wednesday to resolve border security funding and try to avert another Trump-McConnell government shutdown. He doesn't have a whole lot to say about Individual 1's ongoing Twitter tantrums, but he does have a succinct reminder for Trump and Congress about their respective jobs.
Asked about Trump's tweet that committee members are "wasting their time" if they don't agree to fund his wall, Tester was dismissive. "The president says a lot of things," he said. Then he got to the real point: "I think the Congress ... needs to do what they think is right to secure the southern border. If the president decides not to sign that, then we'll come back as I said before and do a veto override."
Oh, hey, that's a good reminder for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who says, "I don't like shutdowns, I don't think they work for anybody, and I hope they will be avoided," but somehow seems to conveniently forget that he's in a unique position to stop them. Or he could take the position House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has on Trump's interference in this process: "He should sign the bill."
