Six out of 10 Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, hitting the highest level of support in an ABC/Washington Post poll since 1995.
The uptick in support for legal abortion got its biggest boost from the segment of respondents saying it should be legal "in all cases," now at 27%, an 11-point increase from its nadir in 2007. Overall, just 36% of respondents want abortion outlawed in all or most cases, slipping 11 points since hitting 45% in 2010.
In addition, nearly three-quarters of respondents support making access to abortion in their state either easier (32%) or keeping the status quo (41%), while just 24% want access to be more difficult in their state.
The partisan breakdown of support for legal abortion looks like this:
- Democrats: 77%
- Independents: 64%
- Republicans: 41%
That’s what a winning issue looks like for Democrats.
