Earlier in July there was much commotion around a suddenly canceled flight by Vice President Mike Pence to a New Hampshire roundtable on the opioid crisis. Did Trump accidentally swallow his Diet Coke button? Had John Bolton commandeered the White House situation room, demanding the generals launch a new war in time for the Fox News primetime hour? Nobody was willing to say. The White House and vice president's office treated the whole thing as the highest of secrets.
We now know the truth was much stupider. Trump's vice president was yanked off Air Force Two just before takeoff because one of the people he was about to meet with was himself under investigation as a drug dealer.
That person, former New York Giants player and well known anti-drug speaker Jeff Hatch, agreed to a plea deal in federal court last Friday.
So that was the enormous secret Team Trump was hiding: insufficient vetting of the people that Mike Pence might have inadvertently graced with his ever-insincere and milquetoast presence. That was the big, mysterious crisis that required Mike Pence to quickly flee Air Force Two and scurry back to the White House.
Sure, whatever.
