If you've heard a lot of chatter lately about House Democrats losing their majority if Bernie Sanders is the Democratic nominee, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi isn't having it. Asked on Wednesday whether she would be comfortable with a Sanders nomination, Pelosi delivered a one-word conclusion: "Yes."
At her Thursday press briefing, Pelosi remained focused on the task at hand. "Our responsibility is to win the House," she said. "We know how to win—we've demonstrated that in the most gerrymandered, voter-suppressed political arena you can name," Pelosi added, harkening back to House Democrats' 40-seat pickup in the 2018 midterms.
Pelosi said the ‘18 triumph came through a focus on the fundamentals of voter mobilization, putting forward a bold progressive agenda, and raising the funds to support candidates. That's where House Democrats' focus will be again, she said, labeling the presidential contest as "its own race."
"Contrary to what you may be hearing or writing," the Pelosi told reporters, "we are all unified. Whoever the nominee is of our party, we will wholeheartedly support. Our gospel is one of unity, unity, unity."
