Unless I am mistaken (and I could well be), all of our major candidates are on the record as supporting civil unions. And the Republicans are almost certain to use it as a wedge issue. It's probably a better wedge issue than race.
Dean is the most obviously vulnerable, but the rest are still vulnerable. Even Clark (he was on CNN saying that he didn't support gay marriage, but saw nothing wrong with civil unions).
So, how should our candidate keep control of this issue? Should there be a Sister Soulja moment when the Gay Pride parades come around next June? Should he go to the parade?
Should we expect, or want to hear our candidate say: "I support civil unions, but not parading around in a leather jock strap while riding a giant phallus float. Those people really ought to settle down."
