A story in the New York Times reveals that anti-war
activists have now become the target of the FBI under the
Bush administration. Attorney General John Ashcroft has given the
FBI permission to investigate individuals who are active in the
anti-war movement as part of his investigation of
"terrorists". The Times piece suggests that a
confidential memorandum sent by the FBI to local law enforcement
agencies "appears to offer the first corroboration of a
coordinated, nationwide effort to collect intelligence regarding
demonstrations" Apparently the names of at least some of
those who are opposed to Bush and the war may be entererd into a
national database of terrorist suspects. Anthony Romero,
executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union said
"The F.B.I. is dangerously targeting Americans who are
engaged in nothing more than lawful protest and dissent".
