There is a World Summit on Information going on right now in Geneva, what some people are billing as "the internet Kyoto". yeah, and it's just as contentious. Of course, our media outlets are completely silent about this landmark event. One critical development was that some developing countries, such as Brazil, China, India, wanted instead of ICANN (a private California company) controlling Internet domain names to shift it to the UN. the U.S. of course, was not fond of that idea. i have no idea what ICANN is, but if someone can shed light, i appreciate it.
the right wing apparently fears a UN takeover of course. Also, apparently there was much tension over open source with the US being toadies for Microsoft. so what's new? i wish we could get decent reporting on this stuff....
