According to
this article in today's Times, the Bush campaign is suspending its ads for the next few days, and possibly through June 30. Their stated rationale for doing so is that no one is paying attention to the campaign right now and they don't want to waste funds. The Kerry campaign responded by saying that Bush is running out of money and needs to conserve his resources.
Is this smart strategy on the part of Rove, McKinnon et al. or is it instead a tacit acknowledgment on their part that they don't have enough money to last them until the Republican convention if they continue at their current rate of spending? I can't understand how this could be a voluntary measure on Bush's part: Kerry will continue to air his ads and has plenty of money to invest in them. He can continue to define himself positively, while Bush will not be able to rely on current events to show him in a positive light. What's going on here, I wonder?
