Inspired by the booing of Dick Cheney by many thousands of baseball fans in NYC, I booed as the Conservative politician who was re-elected in my riding (in Alberta Canada) drove past in a suit and top hat during the Canada Day parade.
This would be like booing on the 4th of July. I imagine this is a strong statement, but this particular MP called the United Nations a "blight on humanity" in the context of amending a motion on the floor of the Canadian Parliament that called for Canada to "recognize as legitimate" the invasion of Iraq by US and other coalition forces.
He did not stop there. He characterized the UN Security Council as a relic that was dysfunctional and archaic. It was because of the "intransigence" of the French, that the world did not act to oust Saddam Hussein.
To my mind, this guy is a wind bag and deserves to be shouted down at any opportunity. He continues to defend his statements and he says the context of his remarks were clear - that he wanted freedom for Iraqis. Though this is noble, it can be argued, this guy is a hawk who belongs to a party that would have Canada's foreign policy forged in the US Pentagon. To dismiss international diplomacy and international law as a blight, as intransigence, as archaic, etc. sounds too much like Rumsfeldian garbage for me not to call him a neocon, despite his being Canadian.
So I stood up and booed him at the Canada Day parade.
QUESTION: Is such a protest over the top?
