Challenge to 17,000 voters blocked
Democrats decry effort as attempt to suppress votes

A late challenge to 17,000 Democratic voters in Clark County by a former Republican operative was blocked Monday when Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said all would be eligible to participate in the Nov. 2 election.
Dan Burdish, a Republican businessman and former state party executive director, challenged the voters in the 3rd Congressional District on Friday, arguing that as "inactive voters" they do not live at the address associated with their voter registration.

Las Vegas attorney Tony Sanchez, who provides counsel to John Kerry's presidential campaign, said only 117 of the 17,000 voters could even be challenged by Burdish.
All 117 still have the right to vote under state law if they provide oral or written proof of their address, or proof that they have moved.
Yet the Democratic National Committee held a national news conference call Monday to decry Burdish's challenge as a means to suppress votes.
"It is to try to disenfranchise voters who are eligible to vote," said Donna Brazile, chairwoman of the committee's voting rights institute and Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign manager. "In Nevada, early voting begins this weekend and it's a very important battleground state."
Lomax said he can see no legitimate reason why Burdish would challenge the voters.
The voter registration scandal is creeping into the mainstream too -- I heard the story on WTOP-AM (Washington-DC) this morning while driving to work. I think that they are an ABC affiliate.
