One of the most telling indicators of a nation divided is the proliferation of combative positioning of yard signs in our communities.
I'm a cyclist who rides in excess of fifty miles a day, traveling through most of the communities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area each week. One of the sad (or humorous) distractions during my daily training jaunts is the wars being waged by neighbors through their use of opposing political yard signs.
During past elections - here in Texas - most of the political signs which sprouted in various lawns bore the sign of the Repugs. However, this time around, Dems are vigorously (and rightly so) displaying their colors.
As I cycle down streets, opposing signs in adjoining properties are aggressively placed inches from each other, gingerly nudging property lines. In some cases, entire streets are a virtual political billboard; especially when neighbors are of mixed party affiliations.
When I pull back and reflect on this display of blatant party loyalty, one thing seems clear. Neighbors who once spoke about soccer, new cars, and recipes for Chicken Cacciatore appear to be tearing at the seams - politics are rarely a matter of casual conversation. Passions are heated. Emotions become embroiled. Bitter feelings ensue.
This is what our compassionate conservative squatter has brought us. While he may be remembered for his failures over 9-11, the fraud of Iraq, and the decimation of the middle class, his legacy will be the division of our communities.
