Lieberman wants to run on the ballot as an independent. He doesn't have much time. Also, he was jettisoned by a third party/independent not so long ago in Florida. So why?
So Joe wants to run as an independent. You think he might take pause and think of what happened in the Gore/Bush/Nader fiasco of 2000 (not that Nader was much of a factor, considering the theft and all).
So what does he have to do to launch a petition drive to do that? I'm assuming that his supporters are not so legion that they will volunteer to do that, and work so hard that they will get his name on the ballot in what- 30 days? 60?
I heard tell that his "volunteers" were all paid, and lazy at that. I am and used to be a political petitioner for pay, and that's how I've gotten by in Bush's economy. I'm not a bum, and I believed in almost everything I've worked on. No Schwarzenegger petitions for me. Plenty of progressive, union-backed petitions here for me to work on.
My point is, if I'm guessing right, he's going to have to hire a hell of a lot of paid petitioners to get him on the ballot. Those without poltical conscience. Some might be Republican volunteers, or paid Republicans. I once had an offer from the Green Party, backed somewhat by the Republicans, to get Nader on the ballot here in 2004. No way was I going to touch that.
My point is, if ballot rules are somewhat the same there as they are in CA (and I don't know), you're going to see a lot of people on the street trying to get Lieberman on the ballot. Someone should do research on who's funding, who carries the petitions, etc. And if you see someone who's petitioning for Lieberman, don't be rude, just give them $10 or $20 or more, or if they actually believe in him (unlikely), dialogue.
Going after the petitioners with kindness and decency, money if possible, will kill the Lieberman threat quite nicely. I'm serious. How do third-party candidates get on the ballot so quickly? Money. Do you want to spend millions trying to defeat Lieberman, or would you rather throw money at a petitioner or shanghei a Republican?
I'm serious here. Look up ballot rules in the state of Connecticut. Ask Ralph Nader; he would know. Then do everything you can to keep Lieberman off the ballot. It shouldn't be that hard.
