My boss stopped to chat with me while I was eating lunch this afternoon. We've talked politics a few times in the past, and from this I know that she is a lifelong Republican with strong family ties to the party. However, she can't stand Bush and told me back in January that she felt the same shame in voting for him in 2000 that she felt after Watergate. She seemed somewhat receptive to Dean at the time (though it might have been because she knew I was a big supporter) but on the whole she didn't really like any of the Dem candidates enough to switch parties.
At lunch today she asked me what I thought of the VP debates. I told her that although I was biased that objectively immediately following the debates I would have called it a slight edge for Edwards since he had more to prove, but that in the last few days that it was proved that Cheney told some out and out lies in the debate giving Edwards a decisive victory. I mentioned the Edwards/Cheney meetings and the fact that he had only presided over the senate on 2 Tuesdays in 4 years.
Her response really surprised me. She said that she heard about the post-debate revelations and that its definitely helped her in making her decision. In short she was just very turned off by Cheney's mannerisms and demeanor and the fact that he was lying kind of sealed the deal for her.
She said she still had some problems with Kerry, but was afraid casting a protest vote (in Ohio) would hand the election to Bush. My big selling point on Kerry was that he is the best equipped to restore our alliances overseas and that is going to be the biggest task for our next president.
In any case, I think she's willing to come over to our side this time. Cheney might want to think twice about lying.
