after leaving before my second class (i couldn't focus at all), i talked to a friend, and met her down at love park. a group of one or two hundred people, a good chunk being of the punk/anarchist variety, but many being somewhat more 'normal' looking like me, were there to protest bush and the war on iraq. eventually we all marched through the streets of downtown philadelphia, with police observing and even stopping some traffic and making a path. we went past city hall, eventually on over to and then south on broad st (the main north-south road), getting some supportive honks and fist pumps as we go. we turned east on to south street, and people came out on to the sidewalks to see and/or support us. we turned north on i think it was third st, up to market, then north around 7th. more...
eventually we marched towards and then ONTO the ben franklin bridge, which spans the delaware river connecting pennsylvania with new jersey (one tv camera documenting it i believe, and a helicopter overhead, but with less than all people willing to go). traffic going east over the bridge to new jersey was halted, or diverted to an alternate route. around halfway across, the police suddenly realized that the bridge was private property, and we had to turn back or be arrested. luckily everyone decided to turn back peacefully.
we were led back towards love park, not able to stray off the designated path (i couldn't even get off of arch st to get to the subway). a fox news camera showed up then, and minutes later we were being followed by a street full of police vehicles. we made it back to love park in one piece, with perhaps only forty people still left.
overall there were a lot of supportive people as we went, most of course staying neutral, and only one or two bush cracks. the police really seemed to not want to make arrests. and so went DAY ONE OF THE RESISTANCE
