Now that we've all been let down with the
Man of the Year selection, perhaps there will be hope in their list of
People Who Mattered. In order presented, we have...
Nancy & Ron Reagan
Thomas Kean & Lee Hamilton
John Kerry
Gavin Newsom
Elliot Spitzer
Viktor Yushchenko
Iyad Allawi
Hamid Karzai
Ariel Sharon
Hu Jintao
Kobe Bryant
Martha Stewart
Rick Warren
Steve Jobs
Lance Armstrong
The
Desperate Housewives
Smarty Jones
Some initial comments before I open the floor up:
- I always thought Gavin Newsom was a dark horse to be Man of the Year. Think of all the commotion he caused when he let gay marriages take place, and then how the backlash to that got the religious right out to the polling stations.
- Hu Jintao finally got some nicer glasses, commensurate with ruling the world's largest country. While I like the half-rimless (what I'm wearing now), I don't get his fascination with the double-bridge frames.
- I've never heard of Rick Warren, but apparently he matters.
- The Desperate Housewises - what the hell? They're really scratching the bottom of the barrel here. Don't get me wrong - I watch (and enjoy) the show, but to say that it matters on the same level as Karzai, Kerry, or Jobs is a bit much.
- I'm not sure why Lance matters any more this year than in others.
