Sorry if this has been discussed, but NE governor Mike Johanns (and Nelson's main threat) became agriculture secretary this week. What are the implications for Nelson? While he isn't safe, I got to think he is in a bit better position. Johanns said he would fill out the 4 years. It wouldn't really make sense for him to take a cabinet post, and come back in two years, especially considering he was popular to begin with. As Politicalwire.com pointed out, this up-ends the NE GOP. Will the incumbent run in 06? If not, will Tom Osbourne run as expected? Or will he run for senate against Nelson? Or will the incumbent step down and run for senate? I don't know anything about NE politics, but I feel, again, Nelson is breathing slightly easier. It will still be a fight though. Thoughts?
Other 2006 News:
Florida: Politicalwire.com says that the oldest son of former governor and senator Lawton Chiles is considering running for gov in 2006. He would have high name recognition, something that the Gop candidates(Lt.gov, AG, and CFO) all have. Could he win? Surprisingly, Betty Castor's name hasn't been mentioned. Her name id is high, she came very close this time, and doesn't have to worry about Bush coattails next time around.

Wisconsin: Tommy Thompson resigned. Could he run for senate against Kohl? I doubt he would run for governor again. More likely senate.
