After a recount, it seems as if right-wing voter turn out has allowed Jim Crow language to remain in the Alabama Constitution.
From THE DECATUR DAILY:
"An unofficial recount total shows that Amendment 2 did fail to pass, as was expected. Alabama law called for a recount because the first round of counting on Election Day was so close.
The tiny margin that caused the loss at the polls also caused Alabama to lose face. Because the proposed amendment failed, there remain in our constitution words that should embarrass most Alabamians.
If a few more people had faith in our Legislature to vote for passage, our constitution would no longer have language that calls for segregated schools and poll taxes. It would also have seen a 1956 amendment removed that includes language saying there is no constitutional right to an education at public expense in Alabama, language inserted to further disenfranchise blacks.
