There are some who say that the Bush AWOL story doesn't have legs, that some (non-fraudulent) record will exonerate him, that it'll remind red-staters of Democratic weaknesses, etc.
I think those people are wrong: it's a perfect illustration of the Bush Experience: Bush takes advantage of his connections to wangle a sweetheart deal (into Yale, out of 'Nam, into HBS, oil biz, Rangers, TX gov, WH, etc., and plenty of legislation since then). Then Bush backs out of a key part of that deal (fulfilling TANG service, making money in business, waging a competent war on terror, being fiscally responsible, etc.) after saying he would perform.
Next, he acts like he's done a great job -- for which he should be rewarded. Finally, when anyone asks him about actual results, he gets snippy about it. "How dare you question me? I'm a man of integrity. Honor. Legitimacy. Responsibility. My word. Accountability. Character. And you're an unpatriotic little shit for even questioning me and my policies."
