I think it's time to put the kibosh on all this "Run, Roy, Run" talk. The man is not good for the process, and him running could be disasterous for the Democratic party on a local and statewide level.
Let's think back a minute to the good old 2000 elections. One of the "defenses" people offer up for Ralph Nader's run is that his campaign helped bring a lot of progressive voters to the polls. These voters didn't help Gore in the election, of course. But those same voters, when faced with a straight Democrat vs. Republican race for a congressional seat, or a mayoral spot, or even a school board chair, surely voted for the "lesser of two evils." Also, they would have supported any progressive initiatives on the ballot. We're talking taxes, bond issues, social concerns...you name it. Because these initiatives don't have a party attached to them, can anyone deny that a Nader voter would have hesitated before pulling the lever for the progressive position?
Now, fast forward to today. With the religious hot button issues of homosexual marriage and abortion (South Dakota) on the political table again, I can't fathom why people are encouraging Roy Moore, (this awful, polarizing figure,) to stir up the crowds and get the religious right out to the polling place in droves.
Now, you might say: Nader ran under the Green party banner, and there were other Green candidates running for office, so his voters would naturally vote for them! This is absolutely the case: the Greens won 22 races in 2000. So let's look at this "Constitution Party" Roy is going to run under...how many other candidates do they have running for office? TWO, so far. A presidential candidate named Michael Peroutka, and some guy running for Congress in Florida. (source). So who are these Roy Moore supporters gonna vote for instead? The Republicans in the House, the Republicans in the Senate, the Republican mayors, the Republican sherrifs, the Republican state supreme court CHIEF JUSTICES (ahem, Roy).
Please people, when you're encouraging Roy Moore to run (and god forbid, sending the man money,) give a thought to all the hard work we're trying to do to win back our government on EVERY level, not just in the White House.
Don't run, Roy!
