It's been nearly a year since we invaded Iraq. During that time our military has been able to interview hundreds of scientists, Baath officials, and military figures; we've had access to thousands of documents and much physical evidence.
I don't understand how with all this information we don't have a better narrative of what went on in Iraq with respect to WMD. We know that he once had these weapons, so...
When did he get rid of them?
How did he get rid of them?
Why did he get rid of them?
The only bits of information we've gotten... that some generals thought other generals had the weapons, but they themselves did not; that some scientists might have duped Saddam... all of these stories seem to curiously conform with the administration's purposes, but how could we not know more? These weapons did not disappear by themselves with no one knowing how it happened. The Iraqi scientists and officials have slim reason to withhold information about this, and in fact could win favor from the occupiers by offering it. Could it be that while Cheney doesn't believe in the efficacy of arms inspections, Saddam -- who had more experience with them -- did believe in their efficacy? Could it be that one of the hundreds of people in Iraq that must have known of the disposal of these weapons has told us when, where and how it happened? Could it be that the doubt about WMDs is too useful to erase with facts?
I think it is highly probable that in this administration A LOT of information is being classified for political rather than national security reasons. And one day truth will come out.
