Went to the California Democratic Caucues today and was elected a Dean delegate for my congressional district (37). I think for me to actually get to go the Democratic State convention in Sacramento, Dean would have to win a majority in my district. I am still not clear on how the whole thing works.
But hell, at least I went and participated! I was sure there would be way too many there for me to have a chance.
There were 45 Dean supporters there and the favorites were the leaders of the local Long Beach Dean Meet-ups. However, sensing a chance to win a spot, I quickly started shaking hands and introducing myself. I talked to a Deaniac who had been to Iowa, but mostly just people like myself, who were impressed by Dean.
I gave a short (one minute) speech and waited for the voting to be counted. I actually tied with someone for the last position and we had to call a coin toss! I won. Heads!
So that was my first experience getting involved at this level. i really enjoyed meeting everyone and I hope Dean does well enough in my area to allow me to attend the convention.
This encourages me to get more involved with politics locally.
Who said Dean wasn't bringing new people to the political process?
