After watching that idiotic "Kerry wanted to raise gas taxes several years ago, but it never happened -- obviously that's why gas is so expensive now!" Bush ad, something struck me:
Isn't this ad from the usual gang of idiots who said that Iraq's petroleum revenues would pay for reconstruction?
Now, I realize that the rest of this may be a bit disjointed, but please hear me out.
Bush gains practically unfettered access to the 2nd-largest petroleum reserves on the planet, and gas prices go up, and that's something that can be swept under the rug? I understand that there are technical obstacles to pumping the enormous quantities of oil that the US needs from Iraq, but a larger flow of crude from that country should count for something, right?
I'm firmly convinced that the high gas prices are due to poor consumer choices (i.e., our idiotic obsession with SUVs and pickups as commuter vehicles), but nobody wants to hear that. However, there is a counter-meme here:
How is it that we invaded a veritable crude oil warehouse and have to pay more for it? Answering that question puts the wrong-wing on the defensive. Either
- We're overstretched, and the infrastructure isn't in place for our massive commitments overseas (hey, where did I hear that before? Oh yeah, Repubs were shouting that about involvment in Bosnia).
- SUVs really are as poor a choice as the left has been saying (for quite a while, too).
- If Iraqi oil isn't keeping prices down, how do you expect ANWR oil to?
