If Democrats are ever to shift our electoral prospects, the 2 memes we must counter are 1. want to raise your taxes and 2. soft on defense
I can't believe people are already buying the meme from Bush that Kerry "wants to raise your taxes by $900 million." but our side is doing a lousy job of countering that, save for Dean and his vain attempts to call it a "tax shift" or a "bush tax" as he rightly should. And man, do i miss Edwards' "Bush values wealth, we value work" schtick. i thought that was the most devastating critique of any Democrat actually against Bush.
but i also wanted to point out this great New Yorker article on how Government has played a crucial role in America of fostering technological growth and innovation, in ways that further "free enterprise."

The 1996 Telecomm Act was a joke. Has any good come out of that thing?? but we need to take this up as our theme: Government is NOT the evil and the problem, as Ronnie Reagan and conservatives have preached for 3 decades. it is a vital partner and key to economic prosperity. Bush is gonna throw that crap about Kerry "believes in big-DC-washington-run government" while i believe in self-ownership and entrepreneurship. and our side just doesn' thave the pithy vision to combat Bush's simple, but effective messages.
