Rep.Burr sure didn't know what he was getting into with this campaign finance reform bizness! Burr offered a truce over campaign spending to Democratic contender
Bowles. They are vying for the NC Senator spot left open since Edwards ran for President.
Burr thought that Bowles wouldn't agree to limit third-party contributions (including contributions from their national parties). Plus, Burr wanted Bowles to even limit his personal contributions, since Bowles has a bunch of money. But Erskine Bowles accepted the offer, except he said he had already spent some of his own money on the campaign. Makes sense....
In an editorial in our very conservative Charlotte Observer, the editors were disappointed that Burr refused to abide by his own offer! Burr said he wouldn't accept his own offer, since Bowles had used his own money in his campaign. How is Bowles money = third party contributions? Only Burr knows the answer to that crazy equation.
So Burr obviously thought Bowles would never consider the offer, and came up with the most idiotic excuse to try to weasel out of it. If this is an example of Burr's campaign strategizin', it's going to be an interesting summer here in hot North Carolina.
