I live in a Republican area SE of Phoenix. The real election to represent me at the state house and in Congress is usually the Republican primary, because in the November general the Dem, if there even is one, usually loses. Now I find myself on the verge of registering as a Republican so I can vote in "their" primary. This week I am invited to a fundraising event and it has set me to thinking.
My congressional representative is J. D. Hayworth, a not-too-bright loudmouth who votes the way DeLay tells him. He has a perfect, 100% anti-choice voting record. My wife is an Ob/Gyn and we are strongly pro-choice. We can't stand Hayworth.
Another Ob/Gyn, a member of Planned Parenthood's board of directors, is hosting a fund raiser tomorrow night for Roselyn O'Connell, Hayworth's pro-choice primary challenger. (Yes, just as there are gay Repubs, so too are there pro-choice Repubs. My state senator, Slade Mead, is one. Happily, he is one of the moderates that recently "crossed the line" to work with Dems and get some decent bills passed this session. Unhappily, he has earned a primary challenge by daring to flout his party's leadership.)
I would much prefer to have my representative vote for Speaker Pelosi but if I can't then I should at least have the best that I can otherwise get. I am reminded of the Spector - Toomey battle and agreed with those who said always vote for the best choice, do not try to get Toomey because Hoeffel can "likely" beat him more easily.
I reserved a place at the fundraiser tomorrow night but have not paid yet. What would you do?
