The wingnuts are trying to introduce all sorts of bills in Congress to put the smiling visage of Ronald Reagan on the ten dollar bill, or the twenty, or buildings or whatever else. RIght after Reagan left office the Movement Conservatives were talking about putting Reagan on Mt. Rushmore.
Before we do anything drastic (like have to look at him every thime we buy something), is it a worthy compromise to put Reagan on Mt. Rushmore, and leave him off all of the money, if we get to put Franklin Roosevelt on Mt. Rushmore?
The four men currently on Mt. Rushmore each did things that contributed immensely to the country. Washington led the battles for Independence, and was the father of our country; Jefferson gave the movement its intellectual heft, and also initiated the Louisiana Purchase; Lincoln preserved the Union and changed the balance of power between the federal government and the states, and Teddy Roosevelt projected American power abroad, created the National Park system, and helped to protect working people from the excesses of Robber-Baron capitalism.
Three of the four men currently on Mt. Rushmore are unquestionably liberals. Is it fair to put Reagan on Mt. Rushmore, who negotiated with Gorbachev to end the threat of Nuclear Holocaust, as we also put on Franklin Roosevelt, who helped save the world from fascism?
